Skincare Product Formulations for Every Skin Type

There are many different skincare product formulations for every skin type available for people to buy, and many of them contain additional benefits and nourishing ingredients.

It’s important to know what is in your skincare products, both personally and professionally, so that you understand how they work and what treatments you need for healthy skin. Knowing your skincare product formulations helps you determine which products work with each client’s needs and what they can do for them.

You must also have a throughout understanding and be knowledgeable about what each ingredient does specifically to benefit the skin. It also helps you choose the right products for each skin type and each concern that clients may have.

Another key aspect of understanding what your skincare products contain is that you can pinpoint any allergens and what products to avoid on certain skin types.

I have compiled a list of which skincare product formulations go with each skin type.

Skincare Product Formulations for Every Skin Type

For Dry and/or Mature Skin:

Heavier cream-based moisturizers are great formulas to choose from for dry and mature skin because they contain emollients to condition the skin.

  • Emollients are types of fats and oils that are used to lubricate the skin and keep it hydrated. They work to protect the skin’s natural moisturizing factors for optimal skin health. Any skincare products that contain emollients help dry and mature skin maintain a soft texture, and prevent dryness and dehydration.
  • Emollients mostly come from fatty acids, fatty alcohol-like substances, fatty esters, and silicone types of waxes. These are usually listed as jojoba oil, glycerin, urea, lactic acid, and more.

For Oily Skin:

Choosing a lotion with less emollient-based ingredients will help to decrease the amount of oil in the skin. Emollients are made with oils and people with oily skin don’t need as many oil-based products.

When looking to decrease the amount of oil in your skin, try looking for products that contain less oil (emollients).

For Acne-Prone Skin:

Choosing skincare products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids (humectant), salicylic acid (emollient), tea-tree oil (surfactant) or benzoyl peroxide (emollient) are sure to aid in healing your acne symptoms.

People who experience acne symptoms can benefit from products that contain a mixture of humectants, emollients and surfactants because they moisturize, hydrate and lubricate the skin.

For Combination Skin:

For people with combination skin, finding products with a good balance of both emollients and hydrating ingredients is a great option. Having combination skin means that you have an oily T-zone (nose, forehead) and dry cheeks, or vice versa, which essentially means you have two types of skin types all in one.

You could also use two separate products like using an emollient-based lotion on your cheeks and a less-emollient-based product on your T-zone area.

Components That Make Skincare Products Effective

When you look at a label on a skincare product, you will notice that ingredients are listed in order, beginning with the highest concentration and working their way down to the lowest concentration at the end.

Many ingredients involved in skincare products come from plants, animal derivatives, vitamins, and minerals and each has its own unique role within each product.

Here is a list of the effective skincare components:

  • Emollients: (see explanation above).
  • Occlusives: A reaction that occurs when an emollient sits on top of the epidermis (outer skin) to absorb water and nutrients, preventing excess water loss. Some occlusive are petroleum, dimethicone, mineral and coconut oils, and different types of waxes.
  • Humectants: Absorbs moisture to hydrate the skin. Some of these are glycerine, aloe vera, honey, and hyaluronic acid.
  • Emulsifier: A surfactant that allows oil and water to mix together, and prevent ingredients from separating.
  • Surfactant: Chemicals used to stabilize the water and oil mixture. These include
  • Preservatives: These ingredients are added to prevent harmful bacteria from getting into the product. Some preservatives include potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, benzyl alcohol, and preservatives found in green tea.
