What is a High-Frequency Facial?

With a high-frequency facial, radiofrequency waves come through a wand, called an electrode, (such as a mushroom, comb, spoon, rod, Y shape, and a point) that is placed onto the skin to help with various skin conditions.

It is used during a facial treatment after steam and extractions to benefit the skin in many ways (listed below).

It can help reduce visible pores, treat acne, fine lines, and more. It stimulates blood circulation and increases collagen and elastin production in the skin, giving it a nice healthy glow.

This type of facial uses blue or red LED light to help heal wounds, reduce signs of eczema, shrink fine lines, and treat other skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, and more. LED light therapy can even help with hair loss and UV sun damage on the skin.

What to Expect During the Service?

Step one: Consultation

Before your high-frequency facial begins, your Esthetician will take a few moments to review the consultation form with you and discuss any contraindications that may interfere with a high-frequency treatment.

Who Should Not Get a High-Frequency Treatment?

This means that it is recommended to avoid high frequency if you experience any of the following contraindications:

  • Symptoms associated with epilepsy
  • High-blood pressure or any heart conditions
  • Metal implants/braces/fillings (may cause a metal taste in mouth & must bite down on a clean piece of gauze)
  • Open wounds, skin inflammation
  • Women who are pregnant
  • Anyone with a pacemaker

*If you have any other concerns or contraindications, I recommend you seek advice from a professional healthcare provider before receiving any high-frequency treatment.

Precautions for High-Frequency Treatments

Before the treatment begins, clients should remove any metals such as jewelry and piercings. This will eliminate the potential of being accidentally burned during the treatment.

For metal fillings, a piece of gauze will be given to the client to bite down on to reduce the mental taste in the mouth. The metal taste is totally common, but some people find it unpleasant and prefer to use gauze.

Step Two: Preparing for the Service

Once you and your Esthetician have thoroughly gone over the consultation form, she will begin. to prepare you for the service.

Your esthetician will show you where you can change and what to change into, with lots of privacy. She will knock (if there is a door), or ask if you are ready (if there is a pulled curtain) and wait for your reply, before entering back into the room.

If you aren’t ready, she will give you as much time as you need to get ready for the service.

Usually, a client gown and headband are provided for you to change into for the service.

Step Three: The Service: High-Frequency Facial

Your esthetician will help you get under onto the treatment table and cover you up under the sheets for modesty. The areas that are above the sheets are the face, neck and decollete, which are areas that the high-frequency machine will target during the treatment.

There will be a piece of gauze placed over your face for the electrode to glide over the top as it moves around your facial areas during the treatment.

The esthetician will ground the electrical current by holding her finger on the probe, and removing it once it comes into contact with your skin. She will then put her finger. on the probe once again when removing it from your skin. The probe is usually applied to the skin in a fluid movement, always in small circles.

Step Four: Post-Service

After the service has ended, your esthetician will give you some privacy to change back into your normal clothes. Once you have changed, you and your esthetician will review the service and she will fill out your client service card.

A good esthetician will always explain to you what your aftercare recommendations are and certain things to avoid post-service, such as no sun exposure or exfoliation for at least 48 hours, etc.

She may recommend a few products for you to purchase at the spa to enhance the life of your facial service and to keep your skin healthy. There is no obligation to purchase these products, but they are recommended to you based on your skincare needs and the type of treatment you received.

Lastly, you can book your next spa appointment, which is usually recommended to come back between 1-2 weeks to achieve the best results for your skin. This treatment is very gentle and should not cause any long-term irritations or concerns.

Types of High-Frequency Gases

There are 2 types of high-frequency gases that this machine uses and are either argon or neon, depending on your skincare needs.

Sometimes clients will come in with whiteheads on their faces that the esthetician can zap a few times to help clear out the pores over time. With the zapping method, grounding the probe is not necessary.

Argon Gas

The argon gas is a purple colour and works well on acne-prone skin to reduce breakouts, blemishes, whiteheads, redness, and even inflammation. Argon gas is also beneficial in providing many antibacterial and deeply healing benefits to the skin.

Neon Gas

Neon gas is slightly different that argon gas because its colour is an orange hue, which provides the skin with many anti-aging benefits for the skin. It helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles while giving the skin a collagen boost to improve its overall health.

This type of gas is great for aging skin because again skin takes longer for cells to renew. It works to stimulate better cell turnover so that your cells have a chance to regenerate faster.

Common Effects on the Skin

Please be aware that when you receive a high-frequency facial, you may feel a slight tingling sensation or see some redness on the skin. This is totally normal and should not be a cause for concern.

There may also be a bit of swelling on the skin, especially for those that have never had a high-frequency facial before, because your body is trying to accept the electrical current on its surface. This usually goes away on its own.
